The true origins of Cannes, in the South of France is unknown, some locals surmise that its first inhabitants - the Oxybians were crushed by the Romans who decided that the little harbor town would make a good trading centre. Some historians say that in fact other locals built a fort to protect themselves from the warring Oxybians, and this fort became known Castrum Canoïs (castle of reeds) due to the reeds (canna in Latin) at the foot of the castle. Whatever the origins, the official name of 'Canes' did not appear until 1619. Certainly its location as a site for a town was helped by a large defensible hill and a natural harbor. The town seemed destined to be just another sleepy fishing village - albeit with many attractive churches. It was probably the arts that has transformed this town, the decision to host a film festival just after the second world war had long term effects, today this town is world famous for its annual film festival, it is the place where stars come to be seen and tourists and wannabee stars flock every summer - this is a town where film deals are made and the art of posing is practiced with utmost dedication - for who knows - there may be film producers walking along the boardwalk looking for the next big thing. This is a town of contrasts, sure you may find fishermen repairing their boats, but yachts worth millions may be pulled up alongside. It is a resort town, famous for being famous and for its wealthy visitors - the latest luxury cars may be seen roaring in the streets (you can buy a Rolls Royce in the town if you so choose). Its reputation as a town for the rich and famous is well deserved, Today tourists flock to it, even outside film festival times. The town has not been shy in promoting itself as visitor's centre. Its Palais Des Festivals is a magnificent structure designed of hosting all sorts of events - it has helped transform Cannes into the second most popular convention town in France. The international film festival is based here as is the annual congress of record producers. While Cannes can represent an expensive destination - premium prices are charged for accommodation during festival times, it does not have to be. Certainly the town is worth visiting to take in the glitz and glamour of the festival, but it also is a good base for exploring surrounding regions. This is one of the most scenic parts of France after all. |
